About the Volvo EX40

Volvo EX40

A bold interpretation of the ultimate urban SUV, the eye-catching all-electric Volvo EX40 boasts emission-free acceleration and an athletic personality. The latest effort by Volvo Cars to achieve their goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040, the EX40 demonstrates significant technological innovation. Power comes in the form of a state-of-the-art battery-electric powertrain that cranks out a maximum 402 combined system horsepower, up to 296 miles of EV range, and a permanent all-wheel drive system. Its sophisticated one-pedal driving capabilities help you maximize efficiency behind the wheel.

This same technological prowess is found inside the cabin of the Volvo EX40 as well. Acting as the centerpiece in terms of infotainment and multimedia access, drivers will benefit from standard Google Services (Google Maps, Google Voice, Google Assistant, and Google Play Store). Engineered to fit your active lifestyle, drivers have a variety of storage solutions including an innovative front trunk. A comprehensive collection of active safety features is further proof of how the Volvo EX40 is transforming the way you think of an all-electric crossover.

What the Critics Say

“The cabin of the EX40 offers everything we love about the gas-powered XC40, including thoughtful cubby storage, a comfortable driving position, and spacious first- and second-row seating.” – Car & Driver

“The Twin Motor car offers bonkers performance from a family crossover, but the whole range is impressively refined. The interior is decently put together with some interesting trim options, while the ride is smooth and sophisticated, a quality that’s amplified in the Single Motor versions.” – Top Gear

What’s New For 2025

The EX40 got one really big change for 2025, its name. Last year, the EX40 was the XC40 Rechage, but Volvo has reworked its naming scheme to make it clearer which models are pure electric, which are plug-in hybrids, and which are mild hybrids. Apart from that, the EX40 is essentially unchanged, although there was one more name change. The top Ultimate trim is now called the Ultra, but again, this is just a name change, and the trim is otherwise the same.

Volvo EX40 Features

Volvo EX40

Electrified Performance

Effortless acceleration, serene power delivery, and zero emissions. These three characteristics embody the remarkable benefits made possible by the groundbreaking all-electric powertrain of the Volvo EX40. Due to this battery-electric foundation, the EX40 powertrain offers a total system output of either 248 or 402 horsepower, depending on the drivetrain you choose, along with exceptional handling characteristics due to the fact that its 79 kWh lithium-ion high-voltage battery is cleverly positioned within the chassis. Slippery conditions are no match for this all-electric SUV thanks to its available permanent all-wheel drive system.

Another advantage of the EX40 is its variety of charging solutions that help ease the transition to an all-electric driving lifestyle. A standard onboard 11 kWh charger can be used at a conventional household outlet. When you’re at home or at work, you can also take advantage of Level 2 charging to help top off the battery when not in use. Perhaps most impressive is its DC Fast Charging capabilities that can recharge the battery from 0 to 80% in as little as 28 minutes at 150 kWh speeds.

Volvo EX40

Innovative Technology

Connectivity and integration are two additional strong points of emphasis that Volvo engineers focused on when designing the EX40. Using the standard Volvo On Call app, drivers can remotely monitor the vehicle’s charge level, lock or unlock the doors, heat or cool the cabin with remote start, and much more with their compatible smartphone. Eager to let your friends and family share your EX40. The standard Car Sharing feature lets you grant access to the vehicle remotely for a predetermined amount of time. Accessing key information and multimedia is nearly effortless thanks to standard Google Services (Google Maps, Google Voice, Google Assistant, and Google Play Store). Using just your voice, a quick Hey Google, find charging stations near me command helps you easily locate charging stations using Google Maps directly from the touchscreen display. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration allow you to bring your favorite apps along for the adventure.

Volvo EX40 Interior

Luxurious Interior

Continuing to demonstrate its positive impact on our environment, the premium interior of the Volvo EX40 is infused with sustainable materials. Examples include recycled plastics used in the carpeting, minimizing waste and harm to the environment. Unique design and strong emphasis placed on proper use of space has culminated in a variety of innovative storage solutions scattered throughout the interior. Relocating the speakers away from the door panels has resulted in large pockets for tall water bottles, tablets, and other necessities. Specially constructed front seats are structured to deliver maximum protection in the event of an accident without minimizing comfort. Boosting audio performance is exclusive patented Air Woofer Technology placed below the windshield. Extra storage bins within the front trunk and rear loadspace proves that the Volvo EX40 is the ultimate companion for your daily drive and your next cross-country road trip.
