Volvo vs Tesla: Choosing the Right Vehicle for Families Who Prioritize Safety

Volvo B5 vs. B6 Engine Comparison

The name Volvo has been practically synonymous with safety for decades, with safety being a major driving force behind the popularity of the brand from the beginning. But newer brands have come along over the years, bringing all-electric drivetrains and claims that they rival Volvo in terms of safety. But as Volvo shifts to a lineup replete with hybrid and all-electric options, many buyers are now questioning just how Tesla compares to Volvo in terms of safety, as well as in terms of reducing climate impacts.

Volvo Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt

Volvo Safety Innovations

Since its inception, Volvo has not only included the latest in safety technology throughout its model line-up, but has been an innovator – actually developing new automotive safety features. Volvo has been doing this for so long that it’s easy to forget that many of the safety features we take for granted today were invented by the Swedish automaker. The most recent Volvo development is the multi-adaptive safety belt, which customizes protection based not only on traffic conditions, but also on the height, weight, and body shape of the occupant. While these advanced safety belts can only be found in Volvo vehicles, here are some other Volvo safety innovations that are now found across the whole industry, including in Tesla vehicles:

  • Three-point safety belt – (1959)
  • Rearward-facing child seat (1972)
  • Side Impact Protection System (1991)
  • Whiplash Protection System (1998)
  • The Inflatable Curtain (1998)
  • Roll Stability Control (2002)
  • Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake (2010)
  • Run-off Road Protection (2014)

Volvo vs Tesla Safety – The Experts

Crash tests and similar safety ratings have historically been a good way to tell if a vehicle is safe. But in recent years, all vehicles have become so much better in crash tests that it’s more difficult to see much of a difference between Volvo and Tesla in these ratings. Other ratings are often just checklists of safety features, which again are going to be pretty similar, since they usually just say whether a feature is present, and not how well it works.

So we need to turn to some experts who take a more holistic approach to safety ratings to get a real idea of what sets the two brands apart. To start with, US News & World Report has extensive car buying advice coverage, and this includes a list of the ten safest car brands on the market in the US*. Volvo is on that list, but Tesla isn’t. Next is Car & Driver, one of the biggest names in the automotive press. Their list of safest vehicles doesn’t include very many luxury vehicles**, but the XC90 Plug-In Hybrid made the list of safest hybrids. Tesla is, again, nowhere to be found on this list.

Volvo Cars – Unparalleled Commitment to Safety

Look both ways before crossing the street. Wash your hands before eating. Grab an umbrella before it starts to rain. We’ve all heard similar advice before. Exercising caution, planning ahead, and taking steps to avoid danger is a concept introduced to us at a very young age and is something carried with us throughout our lives. Looking out for ourselves and for one another helps us all create a world where safety remains paramount. At Volvo Cars, we believe safety is all about people. Since 1970, safety has remained a guiding principle that’s engineered into each vehicle we build.

Even the most typical and mundane of days can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye. The sheer unpredictability of the weather conditions and the uncertainty of other drivers’ actions can transform a forgettable commute into a lifetime of consequences. Volvo Cars believes that the safest accidents are those that never occur in the first place. This holistic approach remains unmatched in the industry, helping Volvo vehicles set the benchmark for life-saving safety innovations. Close your eyes and imagine the feeling of security and reassurance made possible by each of the following Volvo safety technologies.

No other automaker is as steadfastly committed to protecting drivers as Volvo Cars. Every driver has a choice of what they drive, a choice that can mean the difference between life and death. Other brands are eager to make headlines and capture the spotlight. Volvo Cars is dedicated to making sure that you and your loved ones stay out of them.

Compared to a brand like Tesla, Volvo Cars has an impeccable reputation for building the safest cars on the road. Safety remains a core value, not an afterthought. The difference is in the details. From the adaptation of female crash test dummies to better replicate the full spectrum of human sizes and shapes during safety testing to pioneering child-specific safety innovations, the track record speaks for itself.

Volvo vs Tesla – Sustainability

Volvo has committed to a more sustainable future, with specific goals in mind. Much of this revolves around the idea of a circular economy, where as much of every vehicle as possible can be recycled at the end of its use – not just using recycled materials to create the parts going into new vehicles, but also remanufacturing and reusing parts from older vehicles. By 2030, Volvo aims to have 99% of all waste either reused or recycled, to reduce per-car water consumption by half, and have new vehicles built from at least 35% recycled content. Volvo’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t end there either, with interior trim pieces and upholstery made from recycled materials, as well as sustainably-sourced and animal-free options. This will be the first step toward a fully circular and climate-neutral business by 2040.

In fact, Volvo already has climate-neutral manufacturing plants in Torslanda (Sweden), Kosice (Slovakia), and Taizhou (China). Volvo’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t end there either, with interior trim pieces and upholstery made from recycled materials, as well as sustainably-sourced and animal-free options.
